How do i revive a wilting crape myrtle plant?

I bought a country crape myrtle plant a few feet high a few weeks ago. I planted it in my backyard here in texas. I watered it everday like it said, put root stimulater, and potting soil mixed with the dirt. Now its wilting. What am i doing wrong? How can i revive it? The leaves are still nicely green but wilted.

How do i revive a wilting crape myrtle plant?
u shouldn't have fertilized it till it was established! cut back the water to once a week... even though it's a new plant! if it don't recover within a few days.. take it back up and put it back in it's original container to let it dry out... then retry planting... without so much water!
Reply:Crape Myrtles are tough trees-- make sure you aren't over watering or over fertilizing it. That will cause the plant to wilt and/or burn.
Reply:It sounds like you may be over watering it. Have you guys had a lot of rain lately?

Just planted my Crape Myrtle tree, wondering about blooming..?

I planted two crape myrtle trees about two months ago. They are about 3 1/2 feet right now, not dwarf bushes but trees, and they have tons of braches but I was wandering when they start to bud...i think I am getting over anxious because some of the other trees are budding and I am not sure when to expect these to...

Just planted my Crape Myrtle tree, wondering about blooming..?
Probably not going to flower this year. If they do, it won't be much. Depending on how you want to train them, I'd cut some branches off. Usually they're trained as kind of small trees with a handful of main trunks leading up to a full crown. You can make them bush-like, but they don't look as good.

You can also coax a second flowering out of them if you cut the flowers off as soon as they're spent. It won't be as big, but it's still nice.

They're pretty tough plants; I've abused mine and they thrive. Don't overwater or overfeed them.
Reply:Depending on your climate right now, will dictate when your crape myrtle trees will bud. When they begin to bloom, the flowering period will be from 60 to 120 days. The crape myrtle is among the longest blooming trees in existence. I have two crape myrtles, one is pink %26amp; the other is purple. I was trying to remember how long after they were planted, that they began to bud %26amp; blossom. I want to say it was about two to three months. I live in the south now %26amp; the crape myrtles are in blossom.
Reply:Crepe myrtles bloom on new growth. Don't prune them. Since they are young trees don't expect a lot of bloom. When they are done flowering, prune. Give them a nice drink of MiracleGro every other week. You'll do fine Kat.

You may not be happy to hear this -- but -- it is not reasonable to expect that these trees put out full foliage in the first season after planting--- this may take a year to develop !!

In any circumstance, however, with the crepe myrtle-- you're looking at its best performance within the absolute Hotest weather anyway --- it sucks up heat conditions that drop other plants dead where they're planted--- actually blooming Better the hotter it gets !!!

Good luck to you

And, take care of these plants over the next while and by next season -- these things are going to be a genuine joy for you to own !!!
Reply:If you just planted it it will not bloom this year unless it was big enough to already have the blooms on it.

What makes the crape myrtle flowers change color every year?

Will crape myrtle clippings root in water?

I took about four clippings from my parents crape myrtle tree and was wondering if they will root better in water or soil.

Will crape myrtle clippings root in water?
Damp soil with root stimulator. Don't just soak them unless it is just overnight. Best of luck. They should grow fairly easily.

Can crape myrtle be grown as a tree in Zone 6 or 7?

I am in Zone 6 or 7 (depending on which resource I inquire to) here in NY. Does anybody know if crape myrtle can be grown here as a tree and not as a die-back shrub only? I know that they are not really cold-hardy and for areas like mine, they die from the ground up during winter only to grow up again in spring. But with this, they would not grow as a tree then....

Can crape myrtle be grown as a tree in Zone 6 or 7?
No, the winters are too harsh. You might get lucky and make it through a few "light winters", but a normal or hard winter will kill it back. I`ve tried several times, it always gets them.
Reply:The National Arboretum has bred Crape Myrtles that are reliably root hardy to zone 6. They have native american names, such as Hopi, Cherokee, etc.

I have had one for several years now in Ohio. Report It

Pruning crape myrtle?

i have had a crape myrtle for two years now and it has never bloomed. Does anyone know what to do or is it not fertile or something else....please help

Pruning crape myrtle?
Crepe Myrtles need to be fertilized with Nitrogen twice a year. The first application of fertilizer should be done before the new foilage begins to appear in the Spring. The second application of Nitrogen should be done in the fall. Crepe Myrtles don't require that much fertilizer but you should apply one pound of actual Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of root area with each application.

I'd advise using a balanced granular fertilzer....such as a 10-10-10. Since Crepe Myrtles don't get too large, you probably only need to apply about 1/2 lb. - 1 lb. per tree. This should be distributed as evenly as possible under the "drip-line" of the tree. (drip-line means the area under the canopy of the tree)

As for pruning....this should be done in the fall or winter only to remove any dead wood.

Hopefully, this should solve your problem about making them bloom. Good luck!

Reply:You really need to trim it back and fertilize with Cow Manure Compost, and then water it well. Unless it is diseased it should produce some of the prettiest flowers you have ever seen this summer.
Reply:There are several sites that come up if you search (crepe myrtle pruning) A couple of things they say is the blooms are on new growth and to cut the suckers off. One thing that has amazed me, our neighbor has one in her yard and her dogs chew hers down every year and so far it has come back with an abundance of blooms every year... When is the growing season for Crape Myrtle bushes?

I am re-landscaping part of my yard. I wanted a Crape Myrtle tree and two Crape Myrtle bushes. At the nursery they only had the trees and said that the bushes were not in season yet. Any idea when this is? I would have thought that it would be around the same time as the trees.

When is the growing season for Crape Myrtle bushes?
Depends on the nursery.

If they overwinter trees left unsold last fall - they could have all kinds of trees. If they don't have a lot of space, they might just clearance price all the small stuff (including shrubs) so they lave less to winter over.

What they may mean by "not in season" is perhaps they time their shrub deliveries closer to their flowering time. Since crape myrtles don't flower until summer, they may not get them in until late spring. (It's easier to sell a shrub that is in flower than one that is a bunch of sticks, or past flowering).

We (the nursery I work in) have crape myrtle shrubs right now. They're completely leafless and dormant, but we have them. Then again, we have 10 acres in which to put our stock, so we load up on anything that can take the cold nights we're still having on the zone 5/6 border.

Just ask your nursery when they are expecting delivery. It may depend more on their practices (or their suppliers), than on the shrub itself.
Reply:IN THE SOUTHEAST PLANT IN LATE APRIL FIRST OF MAY YOU WILL HAVE NICE BLOOMS JUNE TO SEPTEMBER..,,GOOD LUCK
Reply:crepe myrtles are one of the last bushes brought in to most nursery's, because they are the last to show green, hot weather plant. doesn't make sense ,just the way it is.

Crape Myrtle Tree?

I have a Crape Myrtle Tree that is about 5 yrs old. The last 2 years it got this funny white powdery stuff on the leaves and eventually on the flowers. Now the powder is coming again on the leaves. (Its doesn't have flowers yet). Last year I sprayed it with an incesticide made for pests, but it did no good. What can I spray on this tree to get rid of this white powder before it blossoms and ruins the beauty of the tree? Thank you for any ideas. This tree is so beautiful when it blooms. Big lavendar flowers.

Spray it with daconil. It is made by ortho. Sounds like powdery mildew disease. It is a fungus.

A dwarf crape myrtle can be alive after an April frost?

Hi,

Last year we planted several dwarf crape myrtle and this year in March they started to come into leaf. April came with an unexpected frost for a week and all the crape myrtle leafs are dead. Do you think the trees are still alive and will come into leaf again?. Should I pruned the trees to stimulate the leaf growing or should I fertilize them?. When the new leafs will come?. Thank you in advance for any suggestion.

A dwarf crape myrtle can be alive after an April frost?
yes they are very hardy. As soon as it warms back up you will see budding. Mine did the same thing here in tennessee. They are just now coming back.
Reply:The plants are in shock. Don't fertilize for awhile.

The leaves will sprout in a week, if not, bye bye Myrtle. They are infants (sic) so it is iffy to survive.

Let the patient rest before you trim, clip, prune...

Crape myrtle trees blooming and bipolar illness?

DOES THE BLOOMING OF CRAPE MYRTLE TREES HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON WITH BIPOLAR ILLNESS. iS THERE ANY REFERENCE IN HISTORY TO ANY CONNECTION WITH THE TIME OF YEAR CRAPE MYRTLE TREES BLOOM AND THE ONSET OF OF AN EPISODE OF BIPOLAR ILLNESS (MIXED).

Crape myrtle trees blooming and bipolar illness?
That's strange. My crape myrtles are blooming now and this is the time of year that I have my worst episode. I associate it with the beginning of fall though.
Reply:Interesting question.Just about as relevant as assuming if a dog howls at night, someone just died. Who's to say there is or isn't a connection. Better get a lot of empirical data together before you base your term paper on this.
Reply:I don't know when they bloom, but during parts of the year (excessive sun or lack thereof) can bring on manic or depressive episodes respectively. Also, some preliminary studies have suggested allergies can bring on mood changes. I heard this on the nightly news but don't recall who did the study.

About Crape Myrtle Trees...?

I am working with a South Florida community that is thinking of putting in some Crape Myrtle Trees. Perhaps, 20-40 around their community. I have heard that if the winter is not very mild, they lose their leaves and look bare. However, I also heard that and they would only stay bare for a few months. Can you please give me your opinion on the Crape Myrtle Tree. The community likes very colorful, flowery, and full trees. They are strongly leaning towards the Crape Myrtle but I don't want to see them end up with a "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree". Thanks!

About Crape Myrtle Trees...?
yes crape myrtle loose there leaves.. but they are beautiful trees.. what about using more than one kind of tree? some that stay green in the winter?
Reply:yep its a lovely tree with purple flowers its true in winter the need cutting back ,worse thing very evassive roots.
Reply:the Crape Myrtle Trees are very COLORFUL trees IN reds/pinks/whites/and some lite/Yellow, very COOLED will make them bare but not for long, they will do FINE south Florida
Reply:The town I live in has them down our main streets on both sides(Mississippi) they are in just about everyone yards, some are bushes and some are trained to be trees. We have 2 large trained ones at the end of our drive that are lilac, when their leaves change For fall they are just as pretty as the time when they flower, mine flowered twice this summer. When the leave fall they need to be to have the branches cut if you are going to train them. Our city takes good care of them some are very old like mine that have a light grey trunk that contrast well with the leaves and flowers and then the fall color. Our town is truly lucky to have such beauty lining our streets.
Reply:Strange the different answers you get.

Crape Myrtle- Lagerstroemia indica is a deciduous tree that blooms in Summer(some ealry, some late) and comes in pinks, reddish, lavender and white. It is small for a tree only reaching about 20 feet here in SoCal. 40 feet is common for other types of trees, so 20 is small :-) Losing leaves IS a sign of winter and not to be considered a bad thing. Remember, plants that are evergreen lose something(leaves, seeds, flowers) year round. Deciduous pretty much do it all at once. I would never consider a leafless Crape Myrtle to look like a "Charlie Brown tree". They are always replacing large Ficus nitidas on city steets with Crape Myrtles. I would not consider their roots invasive.

Good luck :-)
Reply:Great trees. I have two "huge" trees. One in the front and one in the back. They will probably stay green year round. Here in Texas, they do loose their leaves. There are different colors I have one white and one red. There is also pink. They get trimmed here every year so they do not get too big and out of control.
Reply:crape myrlte is largly considered a large flowering shrub that blooms in the fall.

For a better 'tree' try flowering dogwood, magnolias, or cherry trees
Reply:crepe myrtle thrives in southern California, so i can only assume that they will do fine in Florida. If any state has mild winters, its Florida!
Reply:CREPE Myrtle bushes are beautiful, but are deciduous...must loose leaves for about 2 months in Florida...they will loose leaves in late November and put them back on in February in Southern Flordia. Even bare, the wood is beautiful, very shapely and delightful to see. But they will not be leafed in December. They are hardy, drought resistant, and can grow to heights of about 25 feet over time. The branches are a very hard wood. Good luck

They set buds in the spring. Prune after blooming or in fall.

New starts can be made from the prunings either by using rooting hormone or placing them in clear containers of water. (strip lower leaves off from at least half way up - no foliage in water)

Have fun!
Reply:im not really sure but if they looked that bad then i dont think so many people would have them.we have them all around our housei cant remember what they did last year. they are so popular though
Reply:Use them as the taller aspects of the landscape. They do loose their leaves but have very interesting bark. I think they are beautiful. You could put some flowering wigglia around the bottoms of them, and azaleas and camilia bushes also for the green when the flowers of all of these are gone.
Reply:Crape Myrtle trees are worthless organisms that should all be cut down and burned.

Crape myrtle?

my crape myrtles lost all their leaves due to a late frost .are thy dead or will they come back soon?if they come back how will affect the flowers?

Crape myrtle?
Your crepe myrtles will be just fine. They will bloom normally, usually around the 4th of July.
Reply:You'll probably have poor flowering. Just be glad you aren't trying to grow peaches - peach crops in the central midwest were pretty much destroyed by a frost last week.

Crape Myrtle?

I was wondering how much a Crape Myrtle Tree would be? Do they flourish in Florida or do they not? How much sun do they need? How much water do they need? I want to get one for my mom for Mother's Day. Are they heavy? Do they die easily? Give me all the info you have. Thanks

Crape Myrtle?
Crepe Myrtles are hardy once established. They prefer full sun and need about 1 inch of water a week. It Florida about 20 mins 3 times a week would be ideal. It can be watered when the lawn is.

The ones with 'Indian' names are the most disease and pest resistant. Natchez, Iroquois, etc.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Crape Myrtles should LOVE Florida. I plant mine in full sun, but I live in Oregon. They would probably do fine with less than full sun, in Florida, but they will need at least some to flower.

You can get them small or you can get them large, so I wouldn't know how to answer the "are they heavy" part of your question. I would say they are neither especially tough nor especially easy to kill, just average in that regard.

They should be well watered once a week around the base during dry periods until established (one to two years), after that, you can cut back on the water.

I think it would make a great Mother's Day gift, but hurry up! You'd best start calling nurseries to see if they have them soon.
Reply:I live in GA, so we're not that far away climate wise. I have several of them. They like full to mostly sunny locations. The weight is determined, of course, by what size you buy. If you get a younger tree, it'll weigh little more than a gallon of milk. Mine are extremely disease resistant. However, the Japanese Beetles REALLY love them and can turn your blooms to zilch if not controlled. As for water, the most lovely my trees ever were was when we had a wet summer and I put beetle traps at the farthest away point on my property. You'll have to check prices at Walmart, Kmart, Home Depot (they have a 1 yr. guarantee) for prices. They usually have great deals at Mother's Day.
Reply:I love crape myrtle!! They take lots of sun and heat. It can be as big as you want.....the bigger the more $$ it's going to cost you. I think my mom paid $60 for hers. They require training or they turn into a bush. I think it would be a WONDERFUL mothers day gift. Can I adopt you?? ;)
Reply:crape myrtles flourish thruout the south,it will be gr8 in florida.u can buy little ones in pots at wal-mart for about 5 bucks,or u can go to a lawn-n-gareden place and buy larger ones from about 15-30 dollars.they grow well, and are hard to kill.they love direct sunlight.we have lots here in north carolina-we do get cold and snow, but even that doesnt kill them.they come in bright colors, and are beautiful-water them about 3x per week.the perfect gift.

Crape myrtle?

I like to know why do people cut the crape myrtle tree and do you suppose to do that and if you do when do I need to cut it .

mines not getting any leaves at the top and I see some people trees is blooming and mines not and some people have pretty tree trunk and mines just got leaves all the way down my trees about four years old please give me all the advice you can about how to take care of the crape myrtle trees i will be very graiful

Crape myrtle?
You need to shape your crape myrtle to get the nice flowering canopy that this tree is known for. Of course the trimming need to be done in late winter before the tree begins to leaf out.

You start by finding two or three middle stalks that you want to use as the trunk of the tree. If you want to, you can use just one.

Cut away all the other excess brances and if necessary, bind the remaining trunks together to force them to grow upward. Then prune the brances on the lower two thirds of the remaining trunks. In the spring, keep pruning away any lower branches and this will force the tree to grow only from the top.

Repeat this process annually until the tree is at the elevation and shape that you want. Now crape myrtle come in a dwarf style that doesn't grow as tall. I have one of these that I use as an ornamental in a large flower bed, and I also thrim the top to shape the canopy. Good gardening takes more that one season. So expect to take a few seasons to get the pretty tree that you are looking for. But onc you do, you will enjoy it.
Reply:Thank you Richard that was some very helpful information I can't wait to cut them this winter I going to try to do my best with the advice you have given me : ) Report It

Reply:Crape myrtles are reall large shrubs we prune into trees which is why you have leaves all the way down. As people above have said, you have to train your plant to be a tree by selecting just one or two stems and let them be the tree trunks.

Crape myrtles are very tender and can suffer from cold damage. So wait spring when very cold weather should be past to cut back the top a bit. The new growth will have the flowers later in the summer. If you wait to prune after all the leaves are out and the plant is growing, you risk cutting off flower buds at the tips. Best to cut in the spring.

Since your plant is already bushy, do you need to make it a tree? Could you keep the mant stems and just have a shrub? That would surely be easier.
Reply:Crepes bloom on new growth, which is why some people hack them to the ground. They are tough and will readily grow back. Depending on what you want, you can shape the plants any way you like. I have some shrub shaped ones, that I trim back every year some to get good bloom growth. I also have some that are now quite tall, one is about 17 ft tall, and has the nice thick, rainbow-hued trunks that I keep new lateral growth pruned back so I have a tree effect. They don't all bloom the same time, I have one white one blooming some now, but the rest of my 20 or so will gradually bloom later in the month, my big red ones won't usually bloom until late July but keep blooming well into September. There are three sizes--minature (tiny, less than 2 ft max) dwarf (3 to 4 ft) and standard size, which can grow well over 20 ft in warmer climates. Minatures are great for small sunny beds, and dwarfs make excellent accent plants. Standard size will work as either a large shrub or pruned into a multitrunk tree, as mentioned above. Give yours time, I am sure it will bloom in a few weeks.
Reply:hey,

(DON"T DO ANY TRIMMING OR PRUNING UNTIL WINTER)

trim all the branches lower than your head, so you have a smooth trunk. don't just lop off the rest of the crape.

In Georgia we call that crape murder. You want to find the main trunk, go to where it splits into two smaller branches, follow each one of those branches until it branches, and then one more time, then cut with a lopper.

check out www.walterreeves.com - he's a georgia gardening expert and search his site. You may not live in GA, but the advice is still solid.
Reply:cutting them back helps the trunk get stronger and thicker.when it loses all its leaves in the winter is when you should trim it.
