Crape Myrtle?

I was wondering how much a Crape Myrtle Tree would be? Do they flourish in Florida or do they not? How much sun do they need? How much water do they need? I want to get one for my mom for Mother's Day. Are they heavy? Do they die easily? Give me all the info you have. Thanks

Crape Myrtle?
Crepe Myrtles are hardy once established. They prefer full sun and need about 1 inch of water a week. It Florida about 20 mins 3 times a week would be ideal. It can be watered when the lawn is.

The ones with 'Indian' names are the most disease and pest resistant. Natchez, Iroquois, etc.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Crape Myrtles should LOVE Florida. I plant mine in full sun, but I live in Oregon. They would probably do fine with less than full sun, in Florida, but they will need at least some to flower.

You can get them small or you can get them large, so I wouldn't know how to answer the "are they heavy" part of your question. I would say they are neither especially tough nor especially easy to kill, just average in that regard.

They should be well watered once a week around the base during dry periods until established (one to two years), after that, you can cut back on the water.

I think it would make a great Mother's Day gift, but hurry up! You'd best start calling nurseries to see if they have them soon.
Reply:I live in GA, so we're not that far away climate wise. I have several of them. They like full to mostly sunny locations. The weight is determined, of course, by what size you buy. If you get a younger tree, it'll weigh little more than a gallon of milk. Mine are extremely disease resistant. However, the Japanese Beetles REALLY love them and can turn your blooms to zilch if not controlled. As for water, the most lovely my trees ever were was when we had a wet summer and I put beetle traps at the farthest away point on my property. You'll have to check prices at Walmart, Kmart, Home Depot (they have a 1 yr. guarantee) for prices. They usually have great deals at Mother's Day.
Reply:I love crape myrtle!! They take lots of sun and heat. It can be as big as you want.....the bigger the more $$ it's going to cost you. I think my mom paid $60 for hers. They require training or they turn into a bush. I think it would be a WONDERFUL mothers day gift. Can I adopt you?? ;)
Reply:crape myrtles flourish thruout the south,it will be gr8 in florida.u can buy little ones in pots at wal-mart for about 5 bucks,or u can go to a lawn-n-gareden place and buy larger ones from about 15-30 dollars.they grow well, and are hard to kill.they love direct sunlight.we have lots here in north carolina-we do get cold and snow, but even that doesnt kill them.they come in bright colors, and are beautiful-water them about 3x per week.the perfect gift.
