Just planted my Crape Myrtle tree, wondering about blooming..?

I planted two crape myrtle trees about two months ago. They are about 3 1/2 feet right now, not dwarf bushes but trees, and they have tons of braches but I was wandering when they start to bud...i think I am getting over anxious because some of the other trees are budding and I am not sure when to expect these to...

Probably not going to flower this year. If they do, it won't be much. Depending on how you want to train them, I'd cut some branches off. Usually they're trained as kind of small trees with a handful of main trunks leading up to a full crown. You can make them bush-like, but they don't look as good.





You can also coax a second flowering out of them if you cut the flowers off as soon as they're spent. It won't be as big, but it's still nice.





They're pretty tough plants; I've abused mine and they thrive. Don't overwater or overfeed them.
Reply:Depending on your climate right now, will dictate when your crape myrtle trees will bud. When they begin to bloom, the flowering period will be from 60 to 120 days. The crape myrtle is among the longest blooming trees in existence. I have two crape myrtles, one is pink %26amp; the other is purple. I was trying to remember how long after they were planted, that they began to bud %26amp; blossom. I want to say it was about two to three months. I live in the south now %26amp; the crape myrtles are in blossom.
Reply:Crepe myrtles bloom on new growth. Don't prune them. Since they are young trees don't expect a lot of bloom. When they are done flowering, prune. Give them a nice drink of MiracleGro every other week. You'll do fine Kat.

You may not be happy to hear this -- but -- it is not reasonable to expect that these trees put out full foliage in the first season after planting--- this may take a year to develop !!


In any circumstance, however, with the crepe myrtle-- you're looking at its best performance within the absolute Hotest weather anyway --- it sucks up heat conditions that drop other plants dead where they're planted--- actually blooming Better the hotter it gets !!!
